DAY 3:
LET’S TAKE A TRIP ON THE RAILROAD
Objective:
Students will simulate a slave’s journey on the Underground
Railroad using the Power Point Net Site link @ http://www.nationalgeographic.com/railroad/
(HOME PAGE) They will design a map based on the simulation.
Time
needed:
40-45 minutes
Materials:
One computer for each student.
Activity:
Students will use my Power Point Link on this Home Page to access the
Power Point. They will individually read and the text and take the
simulated journey. Following the completion of their journey they will use
“Kid Pix” to design a map. The specific directions to the design are
shown on the Power Point.
Assessment:
The evaluation for the simulation will be through a journal activity. The
students will choose a point of view. This may be of a conductor, a
stationmaster, a Quaker, a fugitive slave, an overseer, or a plantation
owner. The students will write a one-page journal entry describing the
journey. A Gallery Tour (students browse the room and read several
entries. After they read they must write a response using the point of
view they have used for their entry) will be the evaluation for the
simulation. The map will be assessed using the following rubric.
