Day 2:
THE REST OF THE STORY
Objective: Students will organize new information using a Story-Sort
Board.
Time needed: 40-45 minutes
Materials needed: Computers using website: www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4p2944.html,
and Story-Sort Pieces. These are made from recipe cards, or tag board.
Activity: Students will work with the partner from the previous day.
Groups will receive a bag containing the pre-cut Story- Sort pieces. In
the bag will also be several blank cards. Prior to reading the information
on the website, students will remove the pieces and place them on the
floor face-up. They will attempt to group the cards into meaning groups.
(Which ones belong together?) They will read they information together,
stopping periodically to rearrange the cards using new incoming knowledge.
Following the classification of the cards, students will provide a heading
for each card category. As they add new knowledge throughout this unit,
they may add new cards to their design. They are organizing their
information.
Assessment: A process assessment will be incorporated into this lesson.
The organized cards will be taped or mounted onto tag board and kept at
each workstation. Not all organizational patterns will be alike. The
students will need to explain or “teach” their semantic organizer to a
neighboring group.
